Nizwa is an ancient city in the Ad Dakhiliyah region of northern Oman, approximitely 1 hour 45 minute drive from Muscat. The city is known for Nizwa Fort, a castle with a huge cylindrical tower built in the 17th century to defend the city's position on a major trade route. The adjoining marketplace, Nizwa Souk, is lined with handicrafts stalls and silversmiths working in small shops.
This historical day trip begins with a visit to Nizwa souq and fort. From here, drive 20 minutes to Tanuf and explore the ruins and have a picnic lunch. After lunch, drive 30 minutes to Al Hamra where you will visit Bait Al Safah museum, this working museum in an Omani home gives a true insight into Omani culture. The last two stops are Bahla Fort and Jabreen Castle. Jabreen Castle is different from other Omani forts because it was not built in the times of war it was a palace constructed in times of peace by a ruler who was passionate about science and art, that's why it is said to be the most beautiful historic castle found in the Sultanate.
