It was built between 1830 and 1848 AD to be a replica of the blue mosque in Istanbul and act as a symbol of independence and freedom against the Ottoman Kingdom. The mosque is very captivating with its ottoman style architecture and the possession of an ornate brass clock a gift from King Louis Philippe of France to Muhammad Ali in 1845 in exchange of an obelisk which stands in the Concorde square in Paris.
