Manshiyat Nasser, or as it is more popularly known, Garbage City, is a slum settlement with a population of around 60,000 on the outskirts of the Moqattam Hills, within Cairo’s sprawling metropolitan area.

The village is notable for having nearly every space of it covered in garbage, including the streets and rooftops of the settlement. These piles of garbage are the result of the Cairo Metropolitan Area having never established an efficient garbage collecting system, despite having a population of nearly 20 million.

The inhabitants of Manshiyat Nasser, mostly Coptic Christians, have filled this gap for the past 70 years. These informal garbage collectors, called the Zabbaleen or “Garbage people,“ collect the garbage of Cairo’s residents in a door-to-door service for a small fee and then transport it via donkey carts or pick-up trucks to their homes in Manshiyat Nasser. Once home, they sort the garbage for recyclable material. The collecting of the trash is traditionally the men’s work, while women and children sort the garbage.

Once the tour is complete you will be transferred in comfort back to your hotel.

As Cairo is overwhelming with so much to do and explore, please feel free to add or skip any sites mentioned as to adjust the tour to your schedule. Just let us know your requests, it will be our pleasure to accommodate your needs.

Is it safe to go to Khan el-Khalili alone?

Visit the Khan el-Khalili souk

However, it is a great place to visit and wander around on your own. It is a true example of the souk atmosphere that embodies Middle Eastern culture. Just be warned that you will be approached by hawkers and, in true Middle Eastern style, people will try to sell you as much as they can.

Is Cairo safe right now 2024?

There are no travel advisories in place for popular tourist spots in Egypt such as Cairo, cities along the Nile including Luxor and Aswan, and resorts by the Red Sea such as Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada.

Can you visit Cairo on your own?

An eternity feels like too little time to explore the magnificent ancient sites, the wealth of cuisine and fascinating museums on both sides of the Nile. Worry not, even a single day in Cairo is enough to fill your solo journey with the grandeur of Giza and the riches of the pharaohs.
