Saladin began the construction of this castle on Mount Al-Muqattam (572-579 Ah /1171-1193 A.D.) in a place known as the Dome of the Air, but it was not completed in his life, and was completed by Sultan Kamel Bin Adil (604 Ah/ 1207 AD), was the first to live and took it as a home for the king, and remained the seat of the rule of Egypt until the reign of Khedive Ismail, who transferred the seat of government to the Abdin Palace in the Khedive Cairo region in the middle of the 19th century.

The citadel witnessed many historical events from the time of the Crusades to the end of the dynasty of Muhammad Ali (1220-1264 Ah (1805-1848), which ruled Egypt from the 19th century until July 1952 revolution.

The castle contains many Islamic monuments that have been added throughout the ages, providing visitors today with a range of places to visit, the most important of which are: The Muhammad Ali Pasha Mosque, the most prominent building inside the castle, the Mosque of Nasser Muhammad bin Qalawun (718 Ah/1318 AD), the Suleiman Pasha Al-Khadem Mosque (935 Ah /1528 AD), and Bir Yusuf, as well as a number of museums such as the Police Museum, the Jewel Palace Museum, the Royal Vehicle Museum, and the War Museum.
